The Art of Paying Attention: Reclaiming Focus in a Fast World

December 13, 2025 Ms. Smriti Tiwari (Assistant Teacher)

Every morning when I walk into my classroom to teach English or Social Studies, I can sense how differently each child has arrived. Some come bubbling with energy, some look tired and some carry emotions they don’t have words for. Before I begin teaching, I remind myself that attention doesn’t come from the mind first..it comes from the heart feeling safe.

There have been days when a usually active child sits silently, staring at the desk.

Once, during my English literature class, a girl who normally loved stories seemed completely disconnected. Later, in our QCT—Quality Circle Time—she finally shared that she hadn’t been sleeping well because of tension at home. She cried softly as the class listened with surprising maturity. The next day, I noticed her responding again, a little more present. That small change made me realise how emotional release can slowly bring attention back.
QCT...Quality Circle Time, is one of the most meaningful practices at Sunbeam. When we sit together in a circle, children speak honestly—about friendships, fears, joys and the pressures they quietly carry. I’ve seen loud children turn thoughtful and quiet as their friends open their hearts. And in those moments, the classroom feels lighter, as if every child has been heard, held and understood.
I still remember one of my brightest boy who suddenly stopped participating. In QCT, he shared that he had lost his best friend and didn’t know how to feel “normal” again. The class silently moved closer to him, offering comfort without judgment. And I realised that attention cannot bloom in a grieving heart—it returns slowly, with support, care and time.
When I teach English literature, I see how stories can gently pull children back into focus. As I read, I watch their eyes soften, their expressions change and their minds settle. A good story slows down the fast world around them. Sometimes, a child who struggles in academics will explain a character’s feelings so beautifully that it fills the whole room with warmth. These small, quiet moments remind me that attention is not something we force—it is something we create.
In a world that rushes, our classrooms can be islands of calm. We teachers become the pause they need. And every time a child truly listen...not out of fear but out of connection.I feel that we are reclaiming their focus, one gentle moment at a time....
“When we slow down for children, their world finally finds room to breathe”.
