Reimagining (Competency-Based) Grammar Instruction for the 21st-Century Learner

In alignment with competency-based education, I have consciously reoriented grammar instruction from rule-based learning to the development of communicative, cognitive, and linguistic competencies. The primary objective of this approach is to enable learners to apply grammatical knowledge effectively in real-life contexts rather than merely reproduce rules for assessment purposes.

Grammar concepts are introduced through contextual and experiential learning. Learners engage with stories, classroom discussions, role plays, and real-world scenarios to observe language patterns before formalisation. This inductive method supports the development of language awareness, comprehension, and application skills, ensuring that learners understand not only the “what” but also the “why” of grammar usage.

Classroom practices are designed to promote core competencies such as critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Activities including sentence construction tasks, guided writing, peer editing, and error analysis encourage learners to reflect on language usage.

Learners demonstrate grammatical proficiency through email writing, dialogue creation, presentations, and structured discussions. These tasks provide evidence of learners’ ability to use grammar purposefully and accurately in meaningful situations.

The integration of technology and AI-enabled tools supports personalised and self-paced learning. Immediate feedback from digital platforms enables learners to identify gaps, self-correct, and monitor their progress. This process strengthens metacognitive skills, learner autonomy, and digital competence, which are essential for lifelong learning.

Reflecting on this practice, I believe that a competency-based approach to grammar instruction fosters deeper understanding, sustained engagement, and practical application. By focusing on observable skills and real-world communication, this approach prepares learners to become confident, articulate, and responsible users of English, equipped to meet academic and societal demands in the 21st century.
