Every year, I walk into a classroom and ask my students one question: “If I took away your phone, your laptop, and your AI tools right now — what could you create?”

The silence that follows tells me everything. And it worries me deeply.

As an educator, I have watched an alarming shift: students reaching for AI before they reach for their own minds. Not because they are lazy — but because we have let them believe that speed matters more than thought, and output matters more than origin. This is not progress. This is the quiet death of the greatest tool humanity has ever possessed: Creativity.

AI Is Creativity’s Child — Not Its Replacement

Here is the truth no one says loudly enough: AI did not create itself. A human did. In the 1940s, Alan Turing — armed with nothing but a brilliant, daring human mind — asked the wildest question of his age: “Can machines think?” That single creative question is why ChatGPT exists today.

AI is not the end of creativity. AI is what creativity built.

And yet, AI can only remix what humans have already made. It is, at its very best, the world’s most sophisticated photocopier. It cannot originate. It cannot feel. It cannot dream. The moment we stop creating, AI stops growing. It becomes a parrot, repeating a world that no longer exists.

The Danger Is Already Here

Over-reliance on AI is not saving time. It is costing us something far more precious. A student who lets AI write every essay never finds their own voice. A professional who lets AI make every decision never develops judgment. A child who never struggles to solve a problem never learns the thrill of solving it.

Creativity, like any muscle, shrinks when unused. And right now, we are watching an entire generation slowly stop using it.

AI cannot feel the ache of a broken heart and turn it into a song that heals a stranger. It cannot look at a child’s confused face and invent a new way to make learning feel like wonder. It cannot be moved by injustice and write words that change minds. These things come from living — from loving, losing, failing, and rising again. These things come from you.

Save Creativity. It Is Your Greatest Tool.

The next time you feel the urge to immediately ask AI — pause. Ask yourself: What would I think, if I thought for myself right now?

Use AI as a collaborator, not a crutch. Ask it to help you brainstorm — not to replace your thinking. Create without a goal sometimes. Sit with boredom. Ask wild questions. Make glorious mistakes. These small, brave acts are how the creative muscle stays strong.

The world does not need more people who can operate AI efficiently. The world needs more people who can imagine things worth building in the first place.
