Teaching Beyond Classrooms: A Journey of Growth, Flexibility, and Inspiration
December 02, 2025 Ms. Shilpa Sharma (PGT-Science)

Teachers are the torchbearers of knowledge who play an important role in moulding young minds. Often called the most noble profession, it carries with it a weight of dedication, passion, deep commitment, and continuous learning. As educators, we often focus on imparting knowledge and skills to our students, but in the process, we also learn and grow ourselves. I still recall my Maths teacher proudly quoting: “The influence of a good teacher can never be erased.” Having been in this profession for almost 11 years, I have transformed in terms of both personality and perspective.
Navigating the Classroom
When I first started teaching, I was filled with excitement and nervousness. I had spent considerable time preparing lessons, but nothing could have truly prepared me for the realities of the classroom. I realised that teaching was not just about conveying information, but also about building connections, managing classroom dynamics, adapting to students’ needs, and most of all, creating a lasting impact.
The Importance of Flexibility
One of the most important lessons I have learnt throughout my teaching journey is flexibility. There were times when students were not prepared for a lesson and needed a break from routine. In such moments, I had to be flexible enough to allow them space for meaningful learning. Every student is unique, with their own strengths, weaknesses, and learning style. Recognising and embracing this diversity is crucial for effective teaching. I learnt to be adaptable and responsive—whether by adjusting lesson plans or finding new ways to engage struggling students.
The Connection Effect
Building positive relationships with students, colleagues, and the wider school community is vital for creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Taking the time to understand students’ interests and concerns, while showing genuine care and empathy, makes a significant difference in their academic success and overall well-being. It is often the quietest, most introverted student who notices every word and action, carrying those reflections—good or bad—for a lifetime. Such students must not be overlooked, for they are deeply impacted by the teacher’s presence.
Rise Above the Noise
Every teacher faces challenges, from managing classroom behaviour to meeting diverse learning needs. Empathy is the key. From my experience, here are some strategies that have worked for me:
Inclusive classroom: Using AI tools, experiential learning, and student-led classrooms to engage and support diverse learners.
Conducive environment: Establishing clear expectations and routines to foster positivity, belonging, and productivity.
Collaboration: Promoting teamwork, critical thinking, creativity, and respect through collaborative activities.
Celebrating success: Acknowledging even small achievements helps students stay motivated and learn gratitude.
Fall, learn, rise: Encouraging resilience by treating failures as stepping stones to growth and comebacks.
Continuous Learning: Staying Current and Effective
Teaching is a profession that requires ongoing growth and professional development. Staying up-to-date with best practices, research, and technologies is essential. I have prioritised professional development through conferences, workshops, networking, mentorship, and even challenging myself with academic competitions.
Self-Reflection and Self-Care
As it is rightly said, “Happy teachers create happy classrooms.” Taking care of our physical, emotional, and mental well-being is crucial for maintaining energy and passion. For me, self-care includes exercise, meditation, and moments of personal time. This prevents burnout and sustains enthusiasm for teaching.
Conclusion
As I reflect on my teaching journey, I see it as a path of continuous growth, learning, and transformation. Through both trials and triumphs, I have come to understand that teaching is not just about imparting knowledge, but about inspiring, guiding, and empowering students to become their best selves. I have learnt the value of patience, empathy, and creativity, and I cherish the moments of connection that make teaching so rewarding.
As I move forward, I am committed to embracing new challenges, adopting innovative approaches, and nurturing a love for learning in my students—one that will stay with them long after they leave the classroom. For me, being a teacher means being a lifelong learner, and that makes the journey worth every step.
